Let’s take a look at some popular Robert Munsch books:

Finding Christmas by Robert Munsch

 Robert Munsch books

You can’t go wrong with a Munsch book! “Finding Christmas” is sure to become a holiday classic. Who hasn’t tried to sneak a peek at their gifts?

In Robert Munsch’s “Finding Christmas,” Julie has a knack for discovering the Christmas presents her parents hide. But this year, she can’t seem to locate them at all! Have her parents decided to skip Christmas this time?

Her friend Denise suggests that the gifts might be tucked away in a big box on the sleigh that Julie’s parents have placed on the roof as a festive decoration. Julie climbs up to check and finds the presents, but then she realizes she can’t get out of the box! With no escape in sight, she decides to take a little nap. Eventually, her parents discover her in the box and wrap her up, placing her under the tree for Mommy and Daddy to find.

On Christmas morning, Andrew and Tyya spot Julie under the tree and decide to wrap themselves up too. When Mommy and Daddy wake up, the kids all shout, “Merry Christmas!”

Munsch beautifully reminds us on the final page that family is the greatest gift of all. “Finding Christmas” is both heartwarming and delightful. The character Julie is actually based on Munsch’s own daughter. Robert’s daughter also appears in the book “Makeup Mess.” The Munsch family includes three children: Julie, Andrew, and Tyya, all featured in “Finding Christmas.”

The talented Michael Martchenko, Munsch’s frequent collaborator, illustrates the book. As always, Martchenko’s artwork is full of personality and charm.

The Enormous Suitcase

The Enormous Suitcase illustrated by Michael Martchenko was “written for a girl who sent Munsch a letter asking for a book about a girl who lives in two different houses.” In the book,  Kelsey rotates back and forth between her mom and dad’s house. This is something that many children in today’s society of split homes can relate to.

Kelsey decides she wants to take items of importance back and forth from house to house with her, including her pillow, a picture frame and even the dog, which her mother tells her not to take. Kelsey packs the dog in the enormous suitcase and takes the bus to her father’s, however she forgets that her father has a cat. Her fears of the cat and dog not liking each other are relieved when she finds the cat and the dog sleeping together. Kelsey’s dad tells her, “Isn’t it amazing how things can work out if you just try?”

On her next trip, Kelsey brings the goldfish to her father’s house, but, instead of the dog and cat liking the fish, the cat eats the goldfish. The books ends with, “Because it turns out that some things do not work out, no matter how hard you try.”

With so many kids living in dual houses the book reminds children that sometimes no matter how often parents try to work things out that it doesn’t always end the way we hope. I think the book gives the opportunity to talk to children about divorce and how many children have two homes. Sometimes custody is shared between a parent and grandparent, or sometimes children live between the homes of two mommies, or two dads or between a mom and a dad.

As always, Marchenko’s illustrations are delightful and engaging.

Braids by Robert Munsch

Braids

Ashley, like many girls, isn’t a fan of her mom fussing over her hair. On this Saturday morning, all Ashley wants is to head outside and play, but first, her mom insists on putting braids in her hair. Ashley has to sit patiently for what feels like hours while her mom brushes, pulls, and braids: back and forth, up and down, round and round. When Grandma arrives for a visit, she notices Ashley’s frustration and asks what’s wrong. After Ashley shares her feelings, Grandma reveals that Ashley’s mom learned to braid from her, and as a child, she also disliked the lengthy process. Inspired, Ashley and Grandma decide to chase Mom around the house, braiding her hair in return. They even give Ashley’s teacher a surprise braid, which she absolutely loves, though not everyone is on board with the idea.

My daughter found the story relatable, especially when it comes to her own feelings about the time it takes for me to French braid her hair. The book carries the classic Munsch humor, and I believe it helps children appreciate diversity, showing that not every hairstyle suits everyone. It also highlights the importance of family traditions.

Calgary Dave Whamon is the talented illustrator behind Braids, and I find his artwork to be vibrant and captivating.

While Braids may not be as captivating as some of Munsch’s other works, it remains a delightful read that kids are sure to enjoy.
