It will soon be that time of year again – cold and flu season. While it may only be August, I am turning my thoughts to preparing for flu season. Although flu and cold season can attack at any time of the year. After-all, we’re expose to millions of germs and bacteria each day. The best and first lines of defense are hand sanitizers and soaps to rid as many as 400,000 germs (per hand) that travel with us every day. While regular household soap does not kill germs, it does wash them off with the help of friction and rubbing. Many people use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not readily available. A small bottle of PURELL Advanced hand sanitizer in ones pocket or purse can give us the protection we need when needed.
Hand Soaps: What is most effective with hand cleaning?
When it comes to washing my hands I found that Dove Beauty Bar is most effective, and least irritating, for hand cleaning. I’m not the only one. Real Simple magazine editors tested 145 different bar of soap to determine which were most effective, for hand cleaning. Dove Beauty Bar was noted to be the best all-around soap.
Hand Sanitizers: What works best against germs?
With so many choices on store shelves, what works best? The most effective sanitizer uses alcohol to kill bacteria. Look for a sanitizer with an alcohol content of between 60 and 95 percent. I always keep a little bottle of Purell alcohol based hand sanitizer in my purse. Purell is the brand people know and trust. It is clinically proven to be effective in maintaining skin health, enhanced with emollients in a skin-friendly formulation that is gentle on the hands.
PURELL Advanced hand sanitizer naturals are bio based certified and made from plant-based alcohol and naturally fragranced using essential oils. I am currently using PURELL Advanced Hand Sanitizer Aloe in my kitchen. I find it has a nice fresh scent and to be gentle on the hands.
Going back to school doesn’t have to mean going back to germs.
With back to school just around the corner, teachers are looking to wipe out germs in the classroom. After-all, school is a breeding ground for the spread of germs and viruses. During school, Kids quite often will forget to wash their hands as frequently as they should, therefore transforming germs to each other. PURELL Advanced Hand Sanitizer in JELLY WRAP Carriers are a fun looking hand sanitizer that clips to ones backpack, so it is readily available when needed.
My eldest daughter clips one to her bag for when going to the gym, my son clips one to his book bag for traveling back and forth to class, and I carry one in my purse. For those of us who deal with small children, a quick, readily available sanitizer is a must have for the purse, diaper bag and car. I swear my little preschooler is a germaphobe. She dislikes having even a bit of dirt on her hands or feet. PURELL Advanced Refreshing Gel Hand Sanitizer Jelly Wrap Carriers are a life-saver.

Safer Choices
Health Canada warns against using any hand sanitizer that contain chemicals, typically benzalkonium chloride. This chemical is found in many of todays alchol-free hand sanitizers. These chemicals may wipe out the friendly bacteria one needs to fight germs. Initial studies have shown benzalkonium chloride has the capability of creating bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Also avoid products containing the chemicals triclosan.
Don’t forget to encourage good hand-washing habits in your children to help keep them healthy all year round.
